PIWI regulatory complex

PiRNAs (PIWI-binding RNAs) are a family of short non-coding RNAs that are mainly involved in gene silencing during gametogenesis. They act by binding to PIWI proteins, a family of close relatives of Argonaute proteins. Here you can see how a piRNA can recognize its target and how the RNA complex is bound to a PIWI protein. The structure of the RNA regulatory PIWI complex from the sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis, has been determined by CryoEM (PDB code: 7KX9)
