I was assigned a project that was to be a design for a book cover. I ended up choosing the novel Carrie by Steven King. I used photos of the actress Sissy Spacek, who played Carrie in the 1970s movie based on the book, as well as cut-outs from magazines, pictures of old master paintings, and war scenes to create a collage.
The planning page for this piece. I was brainstorming several different ways I could make the book cover.
A prototype color drawing of the design I chose. This was just a quick doodle done in a few minutes.
Another color study. I ended up not using this, but it was useful for figuring out color palettes and how best to depict Spacek's face.
The final colored pencil rendition of the main part of the collage.
Collage work in progress. I used random eyes, lips, and faces, as well as old master artworks with religious themes and photos of war scenes and other violent events. These were chosen in correspondence of some of the themes in the book, such as social judgement, religion, and violent catastrophe.
The finished collage, enhanced in Adobe Photoshop.
