In 2008 Yelp was new in Portland. Their Community Manager, the adorable and dynamic Laura Nestler, was scouting for opportunities thatwould promote Yelp’s service and be an unforgettable offline experience for theirgrowing online community. We met thatfirst time in my Studios on the river.
I had a stack of unused phone directories at the front doorready to go out into the recycling bin. That stack inspired a conversationabout how sites like Yelp had the potential of putting Yellow Pages publishersout of business—with the happy by-product of cutting consumer costs and saving naturalresources.
It was in that moment that the Phonebook MashUp was born. Isent out a Call for artists to convert phone books into art, and Laura arrangedan exclusive kick-off event for her Top Yelpers to meet the artists I selectedfor the project. It took about 4 weeksto process the Call, set the exhibition date and location and organize thekick-off event.
