Reimagining Piranesi’s Prisons

Tutor: Mark Panckhurst
The course focused on advanced freehand 2D and 3D drawing techniques culminating in a single exercise that reinterpreted the ‘I Carceri’ series of etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Students analysed and emulated the drawing concepts and techniques of Piranesi in preparation for their final deliverable. Cycles of 3D freehand drawing exercises formed the basis of a process orientated project testing different representation techniques as well as understanding the construction of three-dimensional spaces. This conceptual approach became a dialogue between analysis, translation and interpretation. Students learned the techniques and vocabulary of 3D perspective drawing including isometric, axonometric, 1-point, 2-point and 3-point perspective. They learned and practiced shading and representational techniques to express lighting, shade, texture and materiality.
