Wasted! Magazine Redesign

For this project I was required to acquire a problematic magazine and find a redesign solution. For the project to commence, a redesign brief had to be written, explaining the history, problems, and project aims.

This project dealt with learning new software, designing for print, typography, and layout. I was required to find creative solutions and use contemporary designs whilst remaining within the clients aesthetic boundaries so not to stray too far from the magazine’s already established brand.

Once the redesign was complete, it was evident to see that it had gained a certain look of professionalism. In other words, it wasn't made in publisher and it doesn't look like it either. Updating the aesthetics in terms of layout has brought the magazine into a world of contemporary design. I guess you could say it's more "hip" and follows current design trends.

To reinforce the concept of 'collectability' each issue of the magazine would have some item of memorabilia, for example in this issue it was a signed poster from the main feature band Feed The Rhino. The format of the magazine represented a 7" LP. The idea behind this was linking collectables to vintage/retro items, and what's more vintage than an LP?

I also had to consider paper, too. For something that will be limited edition, it's inevitable that the quality of paper will be of a high standard. Everyone loves the touch of good quality paper... or is that just me? With this in mind, these would be my paper stock guidelines:

Front cover - Matte Laminated 350gsm;
Signed poster - High Gloss Coated 300gsm;
Pages - Matt Coated 135gsm.
