The president of University of The Bahamas, Dr. Rodney D. Smith has over twenty years of experience in key leadership positions at higher education institutions. During his tenure at University of The Bahamas, he has initiated numerous reforms through visionary and transformational leadership. A Millennium Leadership Institute Fellow, Dr. Rodney D. Smith serves on the board of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) brings together over 400 universities and public colleges with an aim of transforming them through leadership and effective public policy. The association is tasked with promoting world-class teaching standards that support career advancement and research. To achieve its mandate, AASCU has multiple programs including the Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI), a premier leadership development program aimed at empowering highly ranked education professionals from underrepresented communities gain the required skills and networking to advance to the position of president.

Launched by AASCU’s African-American presidents, MLI seeks to ensure broader diversity is achieved in higher education leadership. This program benefits African-American, Latino, Hispanic, and Asian and Pacific Islanders holding senior-level positions who are looking for opportunities to advance their careers. For over two decades, MLI has played a major role in assisting institutions diversify leadership at the executive level.
