ONC Health IT Data Dashboard

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is a resource to the entire health system, supporting the adoption of health IT and nationwide, health information exchange to improve health care. Through the Health IT Dashboard, ONC provides access to analysis, reporting, and datasets that monitor health information technology trends and ONC program and policies.

The Opportunity

ONC identified the Health IT Dashboard as an area for improvement and opted to move their existing data dashboard website to their primary website at HealthIT.gov. The Spire Communications web team was tasked with creating an experience and interface design that improves the ability to find, filter, and access analytics, reports, and datasets. The design needed to work within the confines of an existing Drupal instance and USWDS standards.

THE SOLUTION

Our goal was to improve quality and simplicity of the interface and data presentation while enabling users to search and filter content based on their needs – all while maintaining 508 compliance. We evaluated the original dashboard to define content types, taxonomies and terms, development features, and template requirements. Data and supporting elements were prioritized to improve the user's ability to search and scan.

Templates were designed for each use case and incorporate features such as sorting and filtering, tagging, sharing, and infinite scroll/load more. The interface design relies on effective separation of content through carefully crafted whitespace, good use of type, and iconography that compliments, not overwhelms, the design. The result was a clear and concise search and filtering solution, presented in a clean, simple, and user-friendly design. Usability on desktop and mobile is expected to be greatly improved and the dashboard is currently in development for rollout.

Because ONC is at the forefront of health IT, it was important the user experience incorporate proven usability practices and modern design principles. The grid-based landing page includes a simplistic search experience and is complimented by dynamic background imagery.
