Student Brief
For this project, I aim to create an application that solves the problem of not completing boring and tedious household chores.
Brief Outcome
The final output is an app that tackles the issue of completing household chores. Gamification techniques have been used to entice young adults and adults to complete their chores. The app runs on a competitive league system to persuade users into completing chores.
Insights

People find chores and other household tasks a bore. Many do not prioritize these tasks as they feel they have more important things to do, or more commonly, are hoping that someone else will do it for them. 50% of Young People Do Not Know How to Do Everyday Tasks (Sillett, 2021)
As people want someone else to do the work for them. They would rather live with the mess until it gets unbearable.
“Doing dishes is gross. There is old, mouldy food sitting in the sink. If you have kids, there is curdled milk in sippy cups that smells disgusting.” Carlson also observed that it’s a thankless job."(Leasca, 2021)
New data from StatsSA shows that South Africa added 45,000 domestic workers to the economy last quarter, this is an extremely large amount of households that have at least a part-time domestic worker or cleaning service.(Writer, 2021)
P.O.V OR Message
Young adults/ adults need a way to incorporate their daily chores into a manageable routine because people don’t make time for daily household chores.
How Might We?

How might we address the lack of accountability of young adults/ adults because people don’t like to to clean up their own mess or the mess of others

How might we address the reward or acknowledgments of young adults/ adults because people don’t like to do things without gaining recognition or a reward.

How might we address the lack of knowledge on household chores that young adults/ adults experience.

How might we address the lack of equity in the execution of household chores  of young adults/ adults because people don’t like to do things without gaining recognition or a reward.

How might we address the lack of chores completed by young adults/ adults because people don’t like to complete chores or do not have the time to execute the chores properly.
Solution
My solution is to develop a league app that gives out points for completing chores. Users can create leagues to challenge each other to complete tasks. Leagues can compete against each other for further competition. This all takes place in a fantasy knight realm.

The logo was the idea that determined the theme for the res tof the app. A fantasy pixel realm is represented in the app and this icon shows that. Our mascot Kingsley the Knight stands in his shining armour, holding a broom, ready to conquer his cleaning goals. It uses some of the apps main colours and stands out even on a small scale.
The main colours are these soft muted pink and purple, with a strong mustard yellow and a neutral beige. The white helps to tie all of these colours together. The colours are visually appealing on their own as well as together.
These typefaces have been chosen as they marry the pixel and fantasy themes perfectly. The fonts while pixelated are still legible and

This is a mock up of Kingsley the Knight explaining the "Power Up" page. The potions each hold a different power up! Power ups are won or gifted either through mini rewards found on the map or by other users. These can double the points earned for a task or exempt them from completing a chore that week.
This is the Main Menu. It works on a simple grid for easy navigation. From top left to right: Messages, Map, Power Ups, Badges, Task List, Leaderboard, Settings and the League leaderboard. The app uses a board game to symbolize progress. This map has large checkpoints that serve as mini goals that provide rewards such as power-ups or points!
These leaderboards are to see who is on top and winning! The system is the same for both the battling within the league and competing against other leagues. Users have the opportunity to "Challenge" League member to complete a task in a certain timeframe. To avoid cheating, a before and after photo must be presented, with the league voting of the chore was completed adequately.
