SYN- Politics of Language Editorial project

SYN- Politics of Language
A collaborative project of which the outcome is a magazine about the politics of language
and censorship in different parts of the world.

The project required to produce a body of editorial work in collaboration with other design students and each of us had their own article within the magazine. Our group decided to focus on its multi-national aspect, producing a magazine based on politics of language from our region or country. The name ‘syn-’ is shortened for synergy, symbolises the concept of multiple nationalities coming together to create one outcome.

For the content of the magazine, I focused on the dialects of different ethnographic regions in Poland and looked at the similarities and differences in the pronunciation and spelling of words from different dialects. I looked at the history of the
Polish language and the circumstances under which it has changed, for example the war, immigration and the influence
of other countries. The contents also cover censorship in post-war Poland, looking at an organisation ran by communists
which would control publishing of materials, censoring any content that was politically incorrect and contrasted
with radical politics of the communist party which was at power.
