7 Creative Strategies
of Graphic Design

I'm Alice Duren, a student at BYU-Idaho and for this first Art 235 project intructed by Pablo Riquelme. My subject of interest for this project was a Sharpie pen. With this object, I explore the 7 different creative strategies of graphic design: combination, juxtaposition, isolation, similie/ metaphor, environmental change, physical similarity and material swap. Each image has a way of visually communicating aspects of a Sharpie pen, as well as giving insight into the process behind each photo. Without futher ado, enjoy the presenation!
The Process
I broke up each strategy into 3 or more sketches and picked which ideas I liked over others.
Combination
"Inky Scratches" where the nails resemble sharpie tips as they mark the surface of a stone. Similar to how nails could scratch a hard surface, sharpies can easily mark any kind of material.
Juxtaposition
"Sweet and Tangy" shows the juxtaposition between a sweet lolipop and the strongly-odored (and unedible) sharpie marker.
Isolation
"Permanent Mistakes" shows the harsh and bold mistakes that can come with misusing a black sharpie on a clear white shirt.
Metaphor/ Similie
"Dual Drawing" (a play on the term "dual wielding" ) metaphorically shows the strength sharpies have in their ink and ability to write boldly.
Change or Context of Environment
"Punching the Breeze" once again shows the strength and power sharpie's have to "hit" anything, either with their strong ink or powerful odor.
Physical/ Shape Similarity
"Sharper than Marker" brings attention to the classic pointy tip of the sharpie pen, similar to a knife or blade in shape. The title also brings attention to how the standard marker has much less of a defined tip as a sharpie pen.
Material Change/ Swap, or Focus
"Covered in Streaks" swaps the cap of a sharpie pen to a head of long hair, bringing attention to the streaks and smooth lines the pen can create.
