Clarity while accessing facilities is a critical aspect of healthcare infrastructure. As part of an effort to smooth traffic flow through a busy corridor adjacent to Vancouver General Hospital, the City of Vancouver commissioned a series of wayfinding and identification signs. The primary goal of the project was to calm traffic and emphasize the nature of the area as a healthcare zone. The design process for this project also included extensive consultation with local stakeholders to address additional quality of life issues for people working or accessing services in the area.
The design challenge for the wayfinding was to support the calming measures implementing through landscape and street geometry by clearly identifying routes and destinations and creating a distinct visual identity for the area. The resulting set of sign types aim to maximize legibility and clearly announce to visitors that they have entered an area where consideration for others and the proper sharing of space is a priority.
