Dust Jacket Re-Design

Dust Jacket Project
The goal of this dust jacket was to present the classic Lord of the Flies in a creative design that gives some context to what the story is about.
I wanted to create a design that would make a young adult or someone of any age excited to read this book.
Mood Board
The story takes place on an island, so I envisioned having forest imagery on the dust jacket design.
Original Book Cover
Lord of the Flies is a classic written in 1954 by William Golding, but it needs a more modern cover. Just be looking at the cover, you have no idea what the story is about. In today’s world, it is getting more difficult for people to sit down and read a book. A cover or dust jacket needs to really jump out at people in order for them to put their phone or technical device down. The current cover is not exciting enough to get someone to pick it up off the shelf, which is why I re-imagined it.
Cover Illustration
I created the cover illustration using Adobe Illustrator. The story has unknown element of what also is on the island with the boys, so I drew a variety of foilage. I kept the main characters as silhouettes because the story has dark undertones.
1st Iteration
My first iteration design was nearly complete. I was able to bring together the summary and about the author flaps to fit well with the design of the front and back covers. I also included a fly and conch shell graphics, which play an important role in the story.
Final Design
For my final iteration, I finalized the typography design of the dust jacket. I changed the type of the quote. I also used the same type treatment on the spine as the cover- having "of the" be smaller than "Lord" and "Flies." I simplified the back flip, and repositioned the bar code to the center.
