AR in VR: Anxiety Relief in Virtual Reality

This is my entry for the 2021 HBO + Adobe Creative Jam Rush Challenge where we were tasked with creating an 80-90 second autobiographical story about a creative outlet or project that helped us get through quarantine during the pandemic.

My submission tells the story of how Adobe Medium in VR helped me cope with anxiety and depression. At the start of quarantine, I was furloughed from my job, and over time my anxiety and depression were outgrowing my small living space. I was reaching a breaking point until one day I was introduced to VR and Adobe Medium. I’ve designed in 3D before, but within the Medium software I could create and physically interact with models in ways I never had before. The virtual space was freeing and the program allowed me to work through my emotions in non-destructive ways so I could re-enter the real world ready for whatever came next. I chose to film my project from a first-person perspective and emphasize music choices opposed to doing a voiceover so the audience could better understand how I felt and feel like they’re experiencing the story themselves.
