It’s easier than ever to translate different languages on our phones these days, but how much meaning gets lost along the way?
I Lost Translation highlights the importance of human interpretation by translating text through a series of languages and then back to its original language again.
Using Google Translate, text will be translated from English > Spanish > Chinese > Tagalog > Vietnamese > Arabic > French > Korean > Russian > German, and then back to English to see how much meaning gets lost along the way.
The results of my thesis show translations of phrases used and heard throughout dating culture to express the futility of solely relying on translation technology without human interpretation—to remind us all that just like in relationships, sometimes all we need is a little human touch.
