There’s nothing more rewarding than having the opportunity to pursue your passion as a career.

Drawing for a living is a very romantic idea, but there’s often a bit of a trade off when it becomes your 9-5. Something that you love doing can suddenly be filled with pressure caused by deadlines, expectations, creative block, and finances. These are not necessarily bad things, and they just come with the territory when providing a service to paying clients. Some clients and projects are amazing, others are draining, but being able to manage those pressure points well is as (if not more) important to being a successful, professional creative.

So, how do you keep your head in the game when the pressure is on? Simple. Do personal work!

If you don’t have time, make time. Explore your own interests. Experiment with new styles, techniques, and mediums. What’s your favourite thing right now? Draw it. Create stuff that makes you feel like a kid again. Do the things that you won’t often be able to when working on a client brief. Don’t wait for your dream project to pop into your inbox - make your own dream project. Help your portfolio become an extension of yourself so that it can reflect the work you want to do. Personal work is where you level-up. It gets your head out of the gutter and reminds you why you love what you do.

I’m sure it’s pretty clear that I value personal work very highly. Here are just a few of the noodles and doodles, personal illustrations, visual ideas, and style experiments that I’ve done in the last (roughly) two years…
