The Sorrowful Putto of Prague

A beguiling, dark and charming set of short tales that blend black humour, tragedy, melancholy, hope and beauty together whilst hitting every note perfectly.

Xavier is a contradictory hero: a baroque angel born into the Renaissance; a being with the face of a child and the bitter wisdom of an old man; a tender lover, a fierce fighter and a hopeless drunk. Above all, he’s a devoted, if reluctant, defender of Prague.

I joined the team back in 2010 when I illustrated the chapter called "Disintegratio" for what was then The Putto webcomic.

I had never drawn comics before apart from a few short one-offs I'd submitted to local competitions in previous years. This turned out to be a formative experience: it was my first serious collaboration, a huge learning opportunity and a confirmation that comics and book illustration are the way to go.

My second contribution to The Putto came a few years later when I illustrated the chapter "The Tragic and Sorrowful Tale of the Melancholy Moon of Malá Strana".

The book was published in 2017.
Both chapters are drawn and inked traditionally and assembled and retouched digitally in Adobe Photoshop.
