FOR MY OWN GOOD? A DATA VISUALIZATION ON INTERNET CENSORSHIP

(Formerly known as "What is the Great Firewall of China Blocking?")

I am a big fan of Internet freedom, which is why I really don't like China's Great Firewall that block sites like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The government claims that they block sites for the good of the country, but exactly what are they blocking and are those sites really as harmful as they claim?

Greatfire.org is a site that monitors thousands of sites to see whether they are blocked or not. I randomly chose 500 of those sites and organized them into 13 different categories, and 33 sub-categories. I also sorted them by language and gave them one to three keywords to describe their content. Afterwards, I loaded that data into Processing to create this visualization.

Each dot in the visualization represents a site and each circle represents a category. Hovering over each dot will reveal data about that dot in the lower left corner. Hovering over the words on the column on the left will reveal data pertaining to the word.

The visualization is fully interactive and can be rotated on its X, Y and Z axis, as well as be zoomed in and out for a better view.

I'll upload the visualization later on, but for now, screenshots of it below.
