This publication documents the history of the grand Monkey Puzzle Trees dotted around Bournemouth that were planted circa. 1900. Whilst focussing on the avenue at the Wimborne Road Cemetery, Cemetery Junction takes you around surrounding cemeteries and the wider Bournemouth area. I think the trees are fascinating but overshadowed by the more popular Bournemouth Pines. Despite dinosaurs chomping on Araucarias over 200 millions years ago, the tree is dying out in it’s native habitat in Chile and Argentina and was officially declared endangered in 2013. I feel it’s only fair to share tiny fractions of their story, and this publication explores their time in Bournemouth and why the endangered tree that seems to thrive in Victorian Garden Towns and Cities, should be protected at all costs.
