I RISE (AWARD WINNING SHORT FILM)

I RISE
Responsibilities: Directing/Editing/Compositing.
The Vancouver Film School had put an ad for a competition that they were making, the competition was called "My Year Video Scholarship Contest". This contest required you to go to their website and pick a phrase from a list of phrases they provided and create a movie based on this phrase.

I was excited at the idea of potentially studying in VFS so I talked to my brother who wrote this short film for me and we came up with the idea for it. We picked the phrase "So to all the long days, late nights, aches, pains and bruises, I say bring it".

We picked the phrase, my brother wrote the story and we shot it in one day in our apartment and I sent it. I didn't have my hopes up because the amount of competition from around the world was tremendous.

A couple of weeks later I got an email that I was short-listed to win. Then a couple of days later I received an email that I had actually won a partial scholarship to VFS! The news was so surprising and so rewarding that at first I didn't believe it. From the hundreds of films from around the world, I was one of the very few that were selected to win. It was very gratifying and it gave me a sense that what I was doing was right.

I received a partial scholarship from VFS but unfortunately after discussing it with my family we came to the conclusion that due to our financial situation we won't be able to pay for the rest of the tuition as it was a partial and not a full scholarship. This of course devastated me because I had won and couldn't go, but at the same time it gave me the push I needed to keep going and create more short films.
