Cailler is one of the principal brands of chocolate from Switzerland. François-Louis Cailler founded the company in 1819. The company headquarters are situated in Broc, a lovely town in the Canton of Fribourg countryside.

Being ranked as the largest chocolate consumers in the world, the Swiss insist on the presentation of their favourite food product. A traditional look and feel, but representing also a pure, aesthetic product.

Branche was and still is sometimes the traditional "goûter" (in English – tea time) for pupils after school, with a bread roll.

As well as the sector aimed at children, Cailler target also the premium sector. The white packaging represents quality and purity. A delicate, barely noticeable swirl indicates the preparation of an elaborate but classical recipe as shown on the bone china plate.

Making premium packaging requires a sound knowledge of the offset printing process and the printer's expectations on the delivered artwork.

An expert on final artwork production, Romuald showed me how to master colour trappings, overprints, application of gold-foiling, embossings and preparing ready-to-print artwork with over six colour separations. I became his right-hand man when it came to producing packaging for hermèscommuncation.

Frigor is the symbol of love, inspired by a scarf which Noël Cailler bought for his wife. She apparently dropped the scarf by mistake on a box of chocolates, giving rise to the silky and luscious design on the box. The red on the milk chocolate box symbolising also the passion between two persons.

Cailler constantly has to innovate to be a leader on the market. The brand does so by releasing limited editions, an example being this box of Kirsch-filled chocolates.

From the outside this box looks simple to print and produce but there were challenges. The gold ink had to be precisely trapped for the CMYK process (present in the cherry and chocolate) to register properly. The red square and rectangle were in a separate Pantone® spot-colour.

On the chocolate and cherry were an emboss and varnish placed as spot-colours in the production file. There was also gold-foiling on the Cailler logo.

The text on the sides were printed with another Pantone® spot-colour as well.
