For a small, self initiated project at university I designed and developed a brand of tools. I wanted the brand to reflect key ideas I saw a tool brand wanting to highlight. Toughness, resilience, faithfulness, dependable and industrial.
One key thing for me to use this project for was to provide an alternate to the plastic dominated packaging for tools. I wanted to highlight how with several standard sized boxes. With descriptive stickers about the product. Almost all packaging can be recyclable, or used on site by builders for storage. I believe that within DIY and trade products the removal of plastic is not only achievable but can be done.
Above: a basic idea of the standardised box with the location for the sticker. To the Right is the layout for the sticker.
With large amounts of tradesmen on building sites in major cities. It makes sense that target adverts in the major commute into the site or opposite the main site entrance can raise awareness among this group who are the highest spenders of tools and equipment.
With catalogues being one of the major ways items are bought in stores at the moment from the larger trade retailers. An idea of how the product and brand can be represented is needed. Above left is a brand introduction. On the move right is a breakdown of a brushless drill, with additional brand information to sell the scene that it operates in.
Posters inside stores or on the outside of buildings are another way that customers are introduced to brands and their products alongside sales. This medium will be used more then billboards but not as much as catalogue pages.
Clothing is another way brands are seen on building sites, introducing others and the wider public to brands that would otherwise not be seen outside of catalogues. This raises awareness about the brand but also can help with creating the brand following others enjoy.
