Here is a WIP sample for a potential client.

The client is wanting to portray emotion as felt in a Palestinian refugee camp. This sample is of a girl smelling bread for the first time in several years.

 

My thought process:

If it has been years, then this girl probably had a loving family who would sit down and eat fresh bread, her and her mother made. During the ravaging war and attacks she may have lost her mother, or others in her family to the horrors.

 

To her this bread is a bittersweet symbol of hope. On one hand she cannot help but to remember the family that she has lost, but at the same time this bread is food for her belly that is in a place of possible hope. For this reason I felt she would have a near smile, while feeling the anguish of her loss.
