My approach to Black and White Photography.
Unhinged - Monochrome Version, Lower Austria 2021
Orchard - Burgenland 2021

We had a conversation with the owner of this vineyard before we entered it. Sometimes it's really nice talking to people and getting to know them and explaining why you are planning to enter their property and what your photography is all about. We should do this more often . also a reminder for myself, so we can prevent misunderstandings and exchange our views with others.
I shot this one handheld and a friend of mine helped me getting the focus right - I just had a blackout and was wondering how to get this one in focus, handheld and with the camera nearly 50 centimeters above my head. Thanks Norbert :)
The Hangman's Crows - Upper Austria 2021

A wonderful inversion, I witnessed this summer in Upper Austria, roaming the surroundings before sunset. I knew this place from several visits but never was able to catch it in foggy conditions. I especially fancy the smaller tree on the right and it's shape, leaning slightly towards the other one. But without fog I wouldn't have been able to get this type of contrast between the background and the tree itself. Sometimes even I am lucky.
Ancestree - Upper Austria, Muehlviertel 2021

I did nearly nothing to this shot, its out of the cam and I just adjusted exposure and contrast.

The story behind it: Having been out of town for nearly 3 weeks, I was lucky to have lots of snow and fog where I was staying in Upper Austria.  I found this trees last autumn and they are standing on the edge of an agricultural field which is descending towards the horizon. In the distance/background there are lots of woods, bushes and other trees which where irritating for the composition I had in mind. I am also able to predict the conditions for this location while looking out of the window from our house as its on the other side of a hill I can see. Finally we had a day where the weather was switching between rain and snow and which and heavy fog formed. So I geared up and went outside to try my luck.
Late Disco - Vienna Woods (Wienerwald) 2020
Progress - Upper Austria, Muehlviertel 2020

A few turns before the street actually reaches our house I found this apple trees some months ago. To be honest I noticed them many years ago, every time we came to my parents in law’s house in Upper Austria but I just started photography after a long break for nearly 10 years in March 2020 again. As I was interested in woodlands and in particular trees a lot, they were the perfect subject for me. As for the conditions and the location of the trees I needed some fog to dover the background and so I had to wait some months until fall 2020. On a cold autumn night some thick formed and I headed outside to try my luck. This two trees were positioned just right to give the viewer the feeling of scale that I had in mind for this composition. For me this image transports the need of progression and growth to reach one’s goals and see clearly without fog.
The Four Horsemen - Vienna Woods (Wienerwald), 2020

One of the few days where I was lucky to find this conditions in Vienna. It was in November 2020 when the fog went meandering through the woods to freeze and stick to the trees and every small twig it found on its way up the hills. Without any goal (like 90% of my photo tours) I started to hike up Vienna's highest hill - Hermannskogel - where I found this incredible conditions.
