Bekah Marie came to me with an idea for her current project album, Chrysalis. She knew she wanted a close up watercolor illustration of a yellow butterfly wing and wanted to somehow put an emphasis on the process of chrysalis, or a transitional state. Bekah uses the phrase to draw a parallel between a butterfly emerging from a cocoon and herself emerging as a professional musician.
We both wanted to keep the imagery as abstract as possible to leave room for the viewer/listener to form their own opinion. Together we decided on the concept of the cave with stalactites and stalagmites forming as the butterfly prepares to leave.
For this project I used watercolors, gelly roll white pens, and prismacolors. I then scanned the artwork, made some minor adjustments in Photoshop and rasterized the image in Illustrator.
