Downtown Cairo Illustrations

This project celebrates the aesthetic beauty of downtown Cairo.
The intricate historic influences still dominate the fronts of bars, restaurants and shops. My intention for this project was to highlight their charm and celebrate them for
being staples of Cairo for generations.

Let's kick start the series with Groppi, Cairo's oldest ice-cream shop snugly
hugging a corner of Talaat Harb Square, and the hearts and tummies of sweet-toothed, confectionary-adoring Egyptians for generations.

Estoril, a timeless wooden bar where jangles of voices fill the air and move around as delicately as smoke. This bar is a hundred conversations told in loud voices, shared among friends, lovers, artists and intellects. I love melting into its atmosphere, intoxicated by its historic presence and the moment all the same.

Cafe Riche, Downtown’s historic landmark rendevous for the artistic, the intellectual, and the revolutionary. Patrons have included Naguib Mahfouz, Gamal Abdelnasser, and Um Kulthum.

Pizza Thomas, Few can walk past Zamalek’s most iconic Pizzeria without grinding to a halt and enjoying the smell of freshly baked pizza dough, sizzling mozzarella, or their celebrity lemon tart.

Thank you for watching!
