Discovering Graham Street

STREETS OF HONG KONG - GRAHAM STREET
This selection of image could be titled, "Graham Street and its environs". Or, "The Environment around Graham Street". But, let's keep it simple.

Of course, there is this to be considered, what you see here now is, in all likelihood, to be no more. This whole area is now being "gentrified" - as part of a large scale urban renewal programme.

Graham Street is [or was] one of the oldest wet or open markets in Hong Kong. It's beginnings go back to the early urbanisation of the Central District. Fresh produce would arrive and be off-loaded at the once nearby docks, Produce would include fresh vegetables, local fruits, rice, chicken, ducks, pork, eggs of one kind or other, fresh fish and seafoods from the nearby shores as well as condiments, preserved and dried foods and more. Most of the produce came in from the farms that once flourished either in the nearby districts on Hong Kong Island and further afield in Kowloon and beyond.

With a quick reference to photography, this is what is meant by keeping a decently maintained image archive. Things happen. Things change. Things disappear - gone forever. About the only thing that remains are the images. In the not so distant past the precinct around Graham Street used to be one of the favourite tramping grounds of many noted photographers of the day - Hedda Morrison and Fan Ho to name two.
