Mysteries of Pop Music Memory
Editorial illustration for Counterpoint Magazine
Thanks to AD Beth Thompson
This illustration accompanies an article in the Magic Issue by Peter Houston. His article resonated with me as my grandma loved music. Even when her health was declining, putting on old records would be a surefire way to get her up and dancing.
The image of the elderly lady whose head formed a record player for memories to dance on seemed the most visually striking and instantly related to memory. I added a dance partner to give the character a stronger narrative - maybe she’s remembering her wedding dance? Or a first dance with a lost love?

Counterpoint is risograph-printed, and this issue’s colours were fluro pink, purple, and teal. I filled the space around the lady with gestural marks, to evoke flowing movements of music and dance. I also added lines that gave the idea of the staff; the lines sheet music is written on.
