Project Description
The proposed project aims to design a Latin American Cultural Center that serves as a safe space and hub for Latin American culture in a community. While there are various Latin American cultural centers on the east coast, there is a lacking of an upscale cultural center surrounded by Latin American values and work that embody educational, artistic, and political opportunities. The Latin American Population within the United States represent the biggest minority in the country. While this is so, only 17.4% of college students in the country were hispanic and only 9.2% represents the percentage of voters who were hispanic during the 2016 presidential election. With dangerous times like these when immigrant families are being separated and having to fear for their lives, it is important to stress education and compassion. Instead of having a wall, an architectural element, represent division and hate-- the cultural center will represent how design and architecture can express inclusivity and togetherness.

Social, Economic, and Cultural Context
As a Latin American Cultural Center located in a diverse neighborhood consisting significantly of a Latin American community, it is an ideal location with enough high traffic but inclusivity to successfully share arts and successfully express a culture. The proposed project would be usable for all age groups. Sponsored by the Hispanic Federation and serving as their New Jersey Headquarters, it has a budget that can help give resources to both adults and children who lack the opportunities in Newark. The city has a long history of diversity and a reputation of successfully representing arts, entertainment, and a home to many educational facilities. The cultural center will add on to the values of Newark by representing community and opportunity.
Concept Statement
Juntos Latin American Cultural Center aims to create a connection between the beautiful, vivid, and historic latin american culture as well as the modern, industrial aesthetic of Newark. In doing this, Juntos will represent unity and the beauty of assimilation and diversity. Through architectural elements including a consistent circulation created by a unifying wall feature, space planning hierarchy, and choice of finishes, the space will encourage curiosity, education, and invite a conversation to promote diversity.
