Three Dark Crowns | Typophoto Book Cover

About
A book cover design for Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.
The book cover is a photograph of hand-cut letters placed on top of fabric and back lit by a blue light source. Sabon was chosen as the title and author's name because of its pointed serifs and how the letter W crosses over itself. Each of the sisters' personas fall apart, so the O is also shown falling down. The summary on the back cover begins with small caps, similar to other books in the fantasy genre.
Process
After the initial mood board and word association, I gathered anything I had on hand and started brainstorming ways to represent the words with the materials. I took photos of my strongest ideas, but eventually settled with using dryer sheets to achieve a "wispy" effect. I printed and cut out the letters of the title, but working with dryer sheets became difficult, so I opted for using a thin black scarf instead. The scarf was folded over once for additional texture and placed over a box that would eventually hold a small light source.
