GAD 2021
Public Domain Book
For this assignment, students were asked to illustrate, choice typeface, and organize the page layout for a text from public domain. For my book, I chose to design the story of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I chose this story because it was familiar to me, which aided in the style I chose for both my illustrations and book layout. I was able to focus more on the book design and illustrations right away, rather than having to take the time to completely read through the story.

However, while choosing what to illustrate for this book assignment, I wanted to consider scenes that were different from what I remembered seeing in the movie. Some interesting differences I found while refreshing myself on the story included, a night of camping in the woods, the wizard escaping on a hot air balloon, and Dorothy's slippers actually being silver rather than ruby.

I wanted to illustrate it a manner that felt balanced with my page layouts, and gave an almost disconnected or 'other worldly' feeling, as that is what Dorothy felt like while she was lost in the world in Oz. I wanted the colors to still felt like the land of Oz, while also appearing slightly gloomy and eerie at the same time in order to give off that feeling of disconnection.
