The Burner is a 7 mile Obstacle Course Race (OCR) in Hubbard, Oh. 2013 is the innaugural running of the event. As the web designer and Social Media Manager, I have been responsible for our online presence, online pre-registrations and various digital designs and illustrations. As an event coordinator I have been responsible for advertising and marketing collateral, flyers, vehicle wraps and various promotional graphic pieces. 

 

Our web site at theburner.us, which was designed prior to any existing graphics (innaugural run remember), relies on color and several illustrations to represent the obstacle course we are creating. As the site was created prior to most event information, it has had to change frequently for new pages and new information. This is all predicated on the idea that new graphic collateral generated by the event will facilitate a site update to fully highlight the event itself.

 

I will keep this page as an overarching "burner" page and will add more pieces to it as my time allows (although that time is pretty much taken up with the actual planning for the event and everything currently being created.) with my goal of having a complete record in the aftermath of the event itself.  

The initial version of The Burner website. The interesting problem with creating all of our advertising for the event is that an innaugural run is missing all of the visual assets you normally see associated with other Obstacle Course Race sites. So I created two runners, illustrated in the same style to overcome our obstacles. 

 

We had access to a small selection of free use United States Army photography which we combined with our own iconography and used various slogans to highlight the unique nature of the event and challenge people to partake. 

We may have also covered the boss'  van in advertising.

More than a photoshop filter but not quite a fully handmade digital painting, this photo referenced illustration  was requested and created for use on a promotional shirt to be worn by Burner staff members at events around the community while promoting and collecting pre-registrations. 

 

This piece allowed me a bit more creative freedom and allowed me to try several new techniques in what turned into a giant mass of cascading layers, masks, filters and hand painting.
