How to: navigate through a Mental migration
ISTD project: Migration

The brief asked to design a typographic work celebrating the theme of ‘migration’. It was expected of the
creator to investigate the widest interpretation of the theme and to draw upon references to different
interpretations, statistics, societies, social groups, and generations. The idea is that designers pick a brief
and convey their interpretation of the brief in a creative way that also does the theme justice.

The strategy: to help individuals between the ages of 18-30 work through their own migration process in a
healthy way, presenting them with a variety of coping techniques and strategies that will help them work
toward self-acceptance as well as situational acceptance.

The Concept: Portray the target audience as their own hero/therapist by using the metaphor of a
mental migration. Show the process of migration by using 1 letter as a representation of an individual,
and show the journey they must go through throughout the book. Show the target audience how
this journey represents their own, and how strong they will come out on the other side after completing
the self-help, how-to guide.
"Migration is an expression of the human aspiration for dignity, safety and a better future.
It is part of the social fabric, part of our very make-up as a human family". - Ban Ki-moon
