The Dictionary of Catalan and Spanish Interpretations

"The Dictionary of Catalan and Spanish Interpretations", 2018/2019

A dictionary is a book or electronic resource that lists the words of a language (usually in alphabetical order) and gives their meaning, or gives the same words in another language, often information about pronunciation, origin, and usage. The dictionary is originally derived from the Latin word dictionarius, meaning "manual or book of words."

The idea for this work arose while I was collecting discarded books on the streets of Barcelona. Inspired by a language I did not understand, in fact two languages: Catalan and Spanish, through frustration, a desire arose to understand the texts and the environment. Through this the idea of one's own interpretation was born.

The Dictionary of Catalan and Spanish Interpretations is a book of Catalan and Spanish words selected by intuition without knowledge of their real meaning. The main purpose of translating the words was to guess and create their own new meanings. I shaped impressions of phrases into drawings, collages or sculptures, bringing memories of Barcelona's visions from my travels through the unique language game.

Trying to thus distinguish or find similarities between Catalan and Spanish words, I also experienced and tried to understand the cultural and political divide between Catalonia and Spain.

It is only at the end of the process when the words are completed and translated that I research the correct translations of the words and find their connection. Through this process, I came to a connection between the author's interpretation and the real meanings.
