“I Burn Paris” was a sensation when it was first published, serially, in L’Humanité, a Communist newspaper, in 1928. Its author, Bruno Jasieński, had come to Paris from Poland, and he began the novel as a refutation of “Je brûle Moscou” (“I Burn Moscow”), a short anti-Soviet and anti-Semitic satire written by Paul Morand, an upper-class French writer who would later collaborate with the Nazis.
