Minimalism - Museum Exhibition Identity Design

Minimalism

Art History Project: Museum of Modern Art are celebrating 60 years from Frank Stella's first ever exhibition of his famous Black Series I. There will be an exhibition with all his paintings from the collection and it will start on Frank Stella's birthday on the 12th of May 2020.

Challenge: Apart of black and white, any other colour is absent from Stella's paintings. They are also very diagrammatical and imposing. To everyone in search of meaning Frank Stella used to say "what you see is what you see". Many artists admired his work and tried to adopt his style in their work, which started the minimalism movement in the 60's.

Solution: The key to advertise the exhibition successfully is to convey a sense of minimalism and movement at the same time. The paintings formed shapes, such as triangles and rectangles. Triangles are used as arrows — symbolising direction, and the rectangles to make the work more dynamic, both in a subtle way conveying a sense of movement.
