STANISŁAW WYSPIAŃSKI MUSEUM
BACHELOR'S DEGREE DIPLOMA

Today, many cities try to identify themselves through "their artist". Barcelona is associated with
Antoni Gaudi, Prague with Franz Kafka and Cracow?

Stanisław Wyspiański is considered to be one of the most eminent figures of the turn of the 19th and 20th century. He was a versatile artist: painter, playwright, set designer, furniture designer, whose uniqueness was recognized by his contemporaries. He is a representative of Polish modernism, who devoted almost all his activity to Cracow.

Unfortunately, in the town where the artist was born, you cannot see the entire collection of his works in any museum. This project was created as a response to the existing need to create a place that will showcase the work of Stanisław Wyspiański and will become a permanent part of the cultural landscape of Cracow.

The museum devoted to art can be attributed a unique role among the objects of contemporary architecture. These buildings emphasize the importance of the place, create an atmosphere, and become spatial signs in the fabric of the city and landscape.

The project is based on the idea of creating a museum quarter, of which the Stanisław Wyspiański Museum will become an integral part, together with the National Museum main building, the former Cracovia Hotel and the "Kijów" Cinema. The open space full of greenery between the buildings will encourage people to spend their free time, being a cultural centre, which is a response to the repeatedly discussed topic of the "Cracow Forum".

SCHEME
The planned institution is intended to be a modern, narrative biographical museum, which will show how diverse Wyspianski's work is, where architecture, literature, fine arts, theatre and monument conservation intertwine. The project involves an underground connection of the National Museum  main building with the planned Stanisław Wyspiański Museum and the Cracovia Hotel (adapted for the purposes of the Museum of Architecture and Design) and the "Kijów" Cinema.

The ground part of the complex - the newly designed Museum building - is a modern, minimalist architecture, based on the play of light and shadows. The green bathed body concentrates the free-standing cubicles into which the individual functions are inscribed. The exhibition spaces have been designed as separate rooms with individual design.

The character of each of them is emphasized by the structure of the wall surfaces, colour and lighting. This procedure aims to restore the "main role" of Stanisław Wyspiański's works by identifying the place where they were originally intended to be exhibited, making it clear that all things are interdependent, and in order to be able to understand this complexity, one must notice the relationship between them. The selection of appropriate colors, materials and lighting leads the visitor, provoking a dialogue with the work of art.
