Interactive photo-booth-on-steroids for Hi

"Physical photo booth meets Instagram, with a special festival flavour…"
 
For a couple of years now, Hi – the populair mobile brand of KPN Telecom, aimed at youngsters in the Netherlands – has been actively present at the major Dutch summer music festivals. Visitors can borrow a mobile phone charger to recharge their devices for free at one of the 500(!) power outlets at their festival stand, uniquely designed by La Bolleur. This year, they aimed for some more social & online activation by introducing an interactive installation.

Based on the initial draft concept of the client, I designed a solid interactive concept and experiential design to align the activation with the main theme and festival experience. This resulted in Festigram, an interactive photo-booth-on-steroids, wrapped up as a man-size iPhone mockup.
Oh… and how did we all love to spin that physical wheel to select a favorite Insta-filter!
The complete experience has a smart analogue twist, leaning creatively on the vast popularity of Instagram amongst our target audience. For example: visitors can hand-select a custom photo filter on the spinwheel and pick wooden props to feature on the photo, making every photo unique. Last but not least: the end-result is uploaded on Facebook as a branded faux-Polaroid, made-to-fit as a profile picture.
Captured photos are instantly displayed on the iPhone display, and also uploaded to the Hi Facebook page for online exposure and social traffic. When idle, a slideshow of previous Festigram moments is shown as a first introduction and stimulus to bystanders. It became a main attractor to the stand –especially at night when full attention got drawn towards the installation, thanks to the automatic flash lights and blower machine...
While the wonderboys of La Bolleur were producing the outer skeleton, I designed and developed the inner guts – a smart combination of low-cost altered hardware with tailor-made software.
Although produced on a shoe-string budget: the interactive installation took thousands of unique photos of visitors during Pinkpop, Solar & Lowlands festival. It ran continuously over several days, without any real melt-down – despite an unnatural summer heat wave (we actually experienced the hottest day EVER in The Netherlands during Solar festival).
