Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency's profile

Benefits of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency is a rural-oriented program in the Shenandoah Valley of Northwestern Virginia with a close agreement between Osteopathic Philosophy and Practice (OPP) and the family practice philosophy. The Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and has additional Osteopathic Recognition accreditation for the training in Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP).

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a set of hands-on techniques osteopathic physicians (DOs) use to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury or illness. Osteopathy employs a non-invasive and drug-free form of manual medicine that targets the entire body's overall health, not just the injured or affected part. DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system as part of their education.

OMT is of great help to people of all ages and backgrounds. The treatment is used to promote healing, ease pain, and increase overall mobility. It is also useful in treating patients' other health problems such as asthma, sinus disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, and menstrual pain, and many others.

Osteopathic manipulation treatment also improves the joint range of motion and tissue balance, which generally helps relieve pain. OMT also assists with sleep cycles and the circulatory, nervous and lymphatic symptoms.
