WWII reenactment events often feature units from the Allied and Axis sides, which include two segments of the Finnish army. The Russo-Finnish War of 1939 led to the Nordic country fighting as an ally of Germany.

After the successful German advance on Poland, the Soviet Union wanted to secure its western border by annexing several areas of Finland. Once the Finnish refused, the Soviet Union attacked, sparking the Winter War. The three-month battle ended with tens of thousands of casualties on both sides and Finland’s capitulation.

The Soviet Union took control of more than 10 percent of Finland’s territory. This loss led to Finland supporting Germany during its multi-year campaign against the Soviet Union. Despite early victories, the heavy loss of life and German defeats reduced public support for the war. The Moscow Armistice between Finland, the UK, and the Soviet Union was signed in 1944.
