The Institute of Place Making - Oerol 2013

Content & Story
The Institute of Place Making (IOPM) investigated experience of place on Terschelling during the Oerol festival in june 2013. The general theme of the festival was Sense of Place. Core questions for the Institute were “What makes a place?” and “Where are the favourite places of the festival visitors?” In order to find anwers to these theme related questions, the Institute asked the visitors to help them with the’research’ by putting the essence of their favourite places in a small test tube and hand these back in at our improvised pop-up office. During the festival, the Institute documented all of the findings and test tubes (the found favourite places) online, on a giant map in the forest and created an interactive database.

The Institute of Place Making consists out of 14 Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Master students who (together with two Landscape teachers) had to come up with the concept themselves and elaborate the project into a theatrical expedition act. During the two weeks of the festival, I documented the prepations and going ons of the project on Terscheling. The final movie gives the people back home insight in how the experimental project took shape during Oerol and into the success of the project. With more than 500 visitors each day and positive feedback of both the visitors and the festival organisation the Institute of Place Making became a joyous and frolicsome project on site.

For the film I used various skills and effects which I learned during the previous film assignments in the themes of image and text, movement and sound, projection and reflection and space and identity. The final movie is a joyful representation of both the Institute of Place Making and the experience gained during the course of Image Emotion and Experience.
