Korean Portrait of Beauty #2 'Dano Day' Original Linocut Print

‘Dano Day’ 단오풍정 is a famous painting by Sin, Yun-bok, a 18th century Korean artist that captures a National Festival during Joseon Dynasty. I took inspiration from this painting and gave it a twist to make an original linocut print of this Korean Woman.

I love the audacity of Sin's portrayal of women in his work generally. The original painting was done in the 18th century in Korea when simply painting 'women' was even frowned upon. However Sin heroed women in his painting and ridiculed aristocrats.

The woman in my print isn’t the main character in Sin’s original painting, but I love her motherly figure, so I thought I would hero her in my Lino print instead.

Sadly there is not a lot of information or records about Sin’s life but I feel his paintings tell so much about who he is as a person. I hope making Lino prints inspired by his paintings will spread his spirit and share thought provoking bravery with the world.
