International Women's Day 2020

International Women's Day 2020
Personal Project

A personal piece to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day. It highlights the importance of solidarity, uplifting every woman to the future, and the undervalued importance of textile art.

I wanted to incorporate textile arts in this piece. Textile arts and crafts (knitting, weaving, sewing, etc) have always played an important role in women’s lives. Unfortunately, it is commonly overlooked as “fine art” because of its association with femininity and domesticity. Women translate their narratives, dreams, and advocacies through these threads and fabrics, and yet the fine art of textiles is merely lumped together as “women’s art” or as “hobbies”.
Equating femininity to weakness and domesticity to less-empowered women is, unfortunately, still present in modern society. I hope we can remind ourselves to move beyond these outdated gender roles that erase all these important narratives (most especially of the oppressed!!)
