CUBA 15
DIRECTOR:Ā ELIZABETH SCHUBĀ IĀ PRODUCER:Ā PEDRO VALIENTE

CUBA 15 (1997, US/Spain, 13:46min) short film by Elizabeth Schub. produced by Pedro Valiente.Ā
With the support of New York Film Academy and Jerry Sherlock in memoriam

STORY LINEĀ With passion and uncertainty, Tzunami Ortega Coyra lives the crossroads between childhood and womanhood through the traditional quinceaƱera celebration.Ā REVIEWĀ "Cuba 15 is a portrait of a young girl turning 15 in a small town on the outskirts of Havana. It takes the form of a show-and-tell. The girl introduces us to her friends and her family, her home, and her hangouts. She loos straight at the camera. She talks, she dances, she horses around, she gets serious. Sheā€™s irresistible. We learn more from her in 15 minutes --about adolescent experience and aspirations and what life in Cuba is--Ā than from a half-dozen feature documentaries." --Amy TaubinĀ NY Village VoiceĀ AWARDSĀ Cuba 15 won Best Short Film Jury Award and Best Short Film Audience Award in Berlinale (Panorama), an Emmy Award Nomination, and a National Geographic Prize, and a total of dozen awards. It was selected in Sundance, SXSWĀ Austin, and MoMA , and over forty film festivals

CUBA 15 I ROBERT WILSON
"Cuba 15 was presentedĀ for the first time ever to an audience of international artists right before its world premiereĀ at The Hamptons International Film Festival in New York where it won Best Short Film Award. By any chance, this first previewĀ also took placeĀ in The Hamptons. It was a special screening atĀ The Watermill Center by Robert Wilson. ProducerĀ Pedro ValienteĀ was at that moment collaborating on the video design forĀ The Days Before by Robert Wilson,Ā commissioned by The Lincoln Center in New York.Ā It was the producer's birthday."Ā --FlyingĀ Fish Work

CUBA 15 I FROM THE PRODUCER
"In my early years at NYFA, Elizabeth Schub was lecturer,Ā contributedĀ to The King of Harlem, led International Relations work,Ā and directedĀ Cuba 15 delivering an Editing Workshop at Escuela International de Cine y TelevisiĆ³n de San Antonio de los BaƱos.Ā When we found Tzunami, she swept away the original ideaĀ of multiple characters.Ā Later on, a New York critic would call her ā€˜cinematic animalā€™.Ā Just 55min on 16mm filmedĀ in two days ended up as a force of nature, a tzunami,Ā that tookĀ the world by storm." --PV
