Diploma work: an art book about PCOS

PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a medical condition which affects hormones of women during their childbearing years (ages 12 to 45). Between 2.2 and 26.7 percent of women in this age group have PCOS. It’s hard to tell exact data, as this disease is very hard to diagnose and majority remains undiagnosed.

It usually comes with hypothyroidosis, insulin resistance, cysts in both ovaries and mental health issues.

My aim was to create a piece to express myself to the depth I’ve never did before as well as to publish a book other women with hormonal or menstrual issues can relate to emotionally.

The book itself has 2 chapters: one for physical and one for mental symptoms.

I decided to use very clear, bold, expressive collages in black and white to illustrate my symptoms. I printed out photographs of myself, cut them around and sew into them with black thread by hand, then photographed them again. I did not retouch or photoshop any images.

I used very short, explanatory text in order not to over explain my thoughts. All the typography in the book is handwritten by me.

I have chosen plain black canvas as cover material for the hardcover with nothing on it, so it is a simple little black book from the outside but also the material can be found on hard cover Bibles as well.

The title of the book is BIBLE.
