"Gabriella the Giraffe" Sculpture

For a skill assignment that was given in an undergraduate sculpture course, the objective was to create an animal of our choice out of wood and to use some of the tools that were introduced in class to create the animal. I selected a giraffe as my animal.  I began by selecting a piece of scrap wood from the bin. I then sketched out the outline of the giraffe in three different layers; two pieces were the outer layers of the giraffe, and the middle layer was used to support the two outer layers and to make the giraffe look more multi-dimensional. A scroll saw was used to create the layers for the outline of the giraffe. The legs and tail were made separately with additional pieces of wood. Wood glue was used to secure the layers and pieces. Final touches included painting the giraffe using acrylic paint featuring brown spots and facial features with lacquer giving it a glossy finish. My giraffe sculpture was also on display in the display case located in the studio art building.
