Detroit businessman Scott Zack considers the future of international sports and athletics in a post-coronavirus world.

With the 2020 Summer Olympics postponed amid the ongoing global health crisis, a new era in international sports and athletics may well be upon us. Scott Zack, a lifelong sports fan and successful businessman from Detroit, Michigan, looks to the future and considers what may be in store for professional sports worldwide, both for the rest of this year and moving forward post-coronavirus.

“The postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics perfectly demonstrates the impact that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is having, not just upon sports and athletics, but on the world as a whole,” suggests Scott Zack, speaking from his home in Oakland County, around 25 miles from Detroit, Michigan.

From the postponement of major sporting events and religious celebrations to the cancellation of countless scheduled vacations and important, long-planned business trips, the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt across the board. “This year, in fact, marks the first time ever that the Olympics have been postponed,” reveals Scott Zack.

Although completely canceled in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to World War I and World War II, never before have they been postponed in the manner seen as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to businessman and entrepreneur Scott Zack. “Originally due to begin on July 24 and wrap up on August 9 this year, the 2020 Summer Olympics have been rescheduled to instead kick off on July 23 next year, wrapping up on August 8, 2021,” explains Zack.

Elsewhere, other major sporting events and games in Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, and the National Basketball Association in the U.S. are also being affected.

While games are still scheduled to be played, they’re being played in empty stadiums before essential staff only as fans are ordered to stay away, according to Scott Zack. “Here in Detroit, for example, play at the city’s famous downtown ballpark, Comerica Park, has only been allowed to resume on the basis that the venue will not be open to fans,” reveals the entrepreneur. Only intra-division games are to be played, too, with teams now divided solely on geography, reports the lifelong sports fan.

It’s a reality, Scott Zack says, which is likely to be reflected at big-league stadiums nationwide, as well as other sporting venues, and stadiums elsewhere around the world. “Whether things return to normal later in the year remains to be seen,” says the businessman. He also points out that disruption within national and international sports and athletics may well continue into 2021 and beyond.

“Eventually, and in a post-coronavirus world, and one in which we’re more aware than ever of novel viruses such as COVID-19, it’s entirely possible that we could see significant disruption to all manner of global events, sporting and otherwise, not just this year, but for many years to come,” adds Scott Zack, wrapping up.
