Image Manipulation & Compositing
DVB102 | week 8
During this week, we covered image manipulation and composite techniques. The task is to create one composite image constructed from four original images taken by myself.
| one: the stage is set.
This is the original unedited background photo that I took today for the composite image - it is the view from my apartment on a sunny afternoon. I delibertately kept the curtains in the shot to get a nice frame. For the composite image, I adjusted the brightness, saturation and noise level to achieve sort of a vintage feel. I also warped the image to make it look surreal.
| two: a hidden surprise.
This is the original unedited photo I took tonight in the garden of my apartment building. I kept the pink leaves on top of the pelican's head in the selection on purpose as I found it quite amusing to look at - it provides the bird with a bit more liveliness. I applied the hard light effect on the pelican to make it more fitting for the overall surreal tone.
| three: what's the time?
This is the original unedited photo I took of the clock in my living room. I like the style of the clock as it is quite simplistic and elegant at the same time. I applied the exclusion effect and the tiled filter to get the final result.
| four: good night.
This is the original unedited photo that I took of the light in my bedroom. I applied the pin light effect and played around with various settings to get the end result in the composite image.
| five: a crack in time.
This is the final image I created which comprises all previous four images. I was trying to create an illusion of time travel - one person alone controls the clock and manipulates time from inside the window, sitting and watching the world turn.
| reflection.
Overall I am quite happy with the result, although I do feel like the tone could be further adjusted to make it look more stylised. I paticularly enjoyed the process of playing around with different settings and parameters to see what works best. I also found the process more enjoyable this time around, as I have become more familiar with Photoshop. Hopefully I will be able to continue exploring more creative opportunities within the program in the future.
