The theme's description was as follows:
"It's total war in the insect world! The Evil Empire of the Arachnids has ultimately decided to attack the many insect's kingdoms and republics of the forest. For the first time in their long history the Shiny Dukedom of the Beetles, the Republic of the Amazons Moths, the Wandering Grasshopper Ronins, the Sacred Theocracy of the Praying Mantis, the Realm of the Ants, the Horde of the Locusts, The Flying Freehold of the Dragonflies and many, MANY others will unite to defend themselves from a common, cruel enemy!..."
The challenge is in #CDChallenge #Insect . Sadly, I was too busy at the time to submit an entry for the challenge. However, I was attracted to the project that I wanted to finish it for myself only.
Although the 1st logical step is to choose an insect type, it was done simultaneously with a rough idea for the character's traits. Fortunately, the firefly was chosen not only for its attractiveness, but also for its serving for the character function and theme.
I wanted to add an element of mysticism to character; turning it to some kind of "Mage" in a demonstration or a skirmish.
The direction that I followed was the tribal life in Africa; particularly the nomadic bedouins, with their clothing, features, and colours.
Then, I looked for other facial elements; which led me to face painting in African tribes.
Other elements were added for accessories like colours and bracelets; which are similar to those with bedouins.
Adding more elements for both traditionalism and mysticism; like incense burner / "mabkhara".
A rough sketch was made to study the body's motion, pose, and forms.
Notice that the face was originally going to be revealed, but I went with covering it to add elements of mystery and tribalism, and also to avoid human face's features on an insect's head.
