The Maritime Shift is a weekly music podcast and program featured on West Seattle Online Radio (westseattle.online) on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 10:00 PM (Pacific). The niche program had a soft launch in late June 2020 on the live-streaming rock music station.
On offer is a look at new and contemporary independent music filtered through a global lens, but with a focus on jazz, afropop and soul. The program is neither academic or exhaustive, but casual and upbeat, and maintains a general music arc format during the three-hour show.
Introductions, breaks and outros are recorded in advance and mixed into the custom playlist each week. A couple of specialty programs were curated in response to events unfolding around the globe. One program focused on independent music by young artists and musicians from Beirut (Beirut Calling, The Maritime Shift, August 12, 2020) in the wake of the Port of Beirut blasts on August 4, 2020. Another program featured independent music from Belarus (Mixtape : Minsk, The Maritime Shift, August 26, 2020) in the weeks of national democratic protests in Belarus in response to the recent election on August 9, 2020.
The Maritime Shift is exclusively promoted through social media and by word-of-mouth as a specialty program on West Seattle Online Radio (WSOR). Promotional reel videos are created using Adobe Spark Video for that purpose, and custom branding for audio files and for the use of "cards" for embedded media players are also designed using Adobe Photoshop.
