Elias
an analogue installation

Elias is an immersive installation that discusses about the darkest depths of our mindspace. The audience are brought through the process of one’s internal struggle, the moment before the breaking point. The installation illustrates the nagging voice we have in ourselves, with the elements exploring the concept in real life, touching on the tangible senses of the audience. The work features an endless stream of transparent strings, accompanied with the slow, repetitive soundscape of water droplets in the background.

The light symbolises the core of someone - anyone who is fighting with themselves. The fishing lines represents the day to day struggles, both internal and external. It is made densely to illustrate the overwhelming problems. At first it might not seem much due to the transparency of the fishing lines, but overtime, the density engulfs you into the space and it becomes overpowering. In the background, a constant water droplet drips onto an empty bucket which creates a repetitive soundscape. The sound of the water droplets are not notable by itself, yet the repetition becomes bothersome.
The Thought Process
We wanted to create a space to encapsulate the feeling of being overwhelmed. We envisioned a space to have a constant element that is always in the participant’s personal space to make them feel both uncomfortable and annoyed. Having a space packed with fishing lines that were suspended from the ceiling will make the participants feel overwhelmed. The lines will then be trimmed around the eye vision / shoulder area of an average height. This is to ensure that the tingling, prickling feeling of the ends will constantly be in the participant’s personal space. For the soundscape, water droplets will be constantly dripping onto an empty bucket. The constant dripping sound will eventually either become a white noise or an annoyance at the back of your head.
